In the quaint mountain town of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, the first Moots, a custom steel road frame, rolled out their doors. The year was 1981 and that bicycle launched one of the most-loved brands in the industry.
Surrounded by 10,000-foot, aspen-covered mountains with miles and miles of trails, Moots next had to make a mountain bike. And two years later, the Mootaineer was born, and instantly took the first NORBA National title. Then, in 1987, the YBB (Why Be Beat), the industry’s first soft-tail design, was built, becoming their signature bike. It was soon one of the most-copied suspension frame designs in history.
By 1991, titanium was Moots' material of choice because of its supremely silky ride, light weight and heirloom-quality longevity. That firmly cemented Moots as a high-end builder of some of the nicest frames out there and ushered in a wave of innovation and palmares.
In 1996 Ruthie Matthes won the National CC title on a YBB, and the first PsychloX cross fame was introduced. In 1997 the Vamoots road frame was offered in stock sizes, still built one at a time. Then, the second-generation Mootaineer was born. It rocked four inches of travel and only weighed five pounds. In 1999, and a full decade before it became a craze, Moots dropped the Mooto-X YBB. It had a unique feature: It had 29-inch wheels.
Over the years, Moots has developed and nurtured an intensely loyal following of riders that fell in love with not just titanium, but Moots titanium. Their skilled craftspeople know that it requires a clear focus on the proper design to create a specific ride experience, knowledge of the unique characteristics of titanium, and a relentless focus on craftsmanship.
Each tube miter and each weld, in every single frame they build, is done by hand. And it's so skillfully done that when the raw tubes are assembled on the jig for final welding, light barely passes through the joints. Every Moots is checked by hand, finished by hand and polished by hand. Next, the head badge is installed, by hand, of course. Then, and only then, can it be called a Moots.
